Hello natural hair lovers,

One topic that stirs up debate among people within the natural hair community is hair identification. At what point do we consider hair to be natural or texturized?  This debate can go on and on without end hence today’s discussion “natural vers texturized: what makes them different”!

Before you begin your natural hair journey either by transitioning or big chop, you must first understand what natural hair really means. Some People understand the term differently hence several different definitions. Some refer to relaxed hair as natural hair! Do not mistake any kind of  “hair” as natural hair.

What Makes Hair Natural?

When your kinky coily hair is found in the state in which you were born with, that is termed natural hair. Simply put, hair whose texture has not been altered by any chemical straighteners including relaxers of any kind or texturizers.

Though natural hair types vary, those of us of African descent are mostly characterized by hard, kinky – coily curl pattern, fragile and drier to the touch.

Though a mere look at the hair may seem strong, frequent conditioning and moisturizing with little direct application of heat will help maintain its delicate health. Yes don’t starve your hair if you want it to grow. If you love it – Feed it!

What is texturized hair?

When a mild form of relaxer (sometimes referred to as natural hair softening cream or texturizer) is applied to natural hair it alters its texture rendering it chemicalized. Texturizers are chemicals designed to break down the protein bonds in your hair in order to permanently change the texture. So the hair will look slightly relaxed compared to your original curl pattern.
